She doesn’t look it in her frilly, yellow mini and big, shiny yellow boots, belting out a hit song at a Port Elizabeth night-spot, but petite cabaret star Zona Visser is a recent veteran of nine months’ “combat duty” in Vietnam.
“Four shows a day, every day, for nine months,” she sighed after her opening show here last night. “My weight dropped to under 100 lbs, my nerves were shot, and I left Saigon by the skin of my teeth, believe me.
Those Hueys – rocket-firing helicopters – were letting go about 100 yards from the hotel patio. From the roof we could see half of Saigon in flames. And of course, the big Tan Son Nhut airfield was closed.
“But the money! Fabulous – it’s an entertainer’s dream. Not including the big-name artist working for charity, I was the highest-paid performer in Vietnam.”
